It will get hot in Tokyo! Athletes must be prepared for extreme heat. The temperatures are at their highest from June to September. Climate tables show that the average daytime temperatures from the end of July to the end of August are between 26 and 31° C - and that with very high humidity. This is exactly the time when the competitions are held.

The World Championships for Athletes in Qatar have already shown how problematic competitive sport is under such extreme climatic conditions. Officials also give warning to the extreme heat situation. Physical strain increases and limits athletic performance. The body uses an enormous amount of energy to regulate temperature. As a former professional athlete and national coach I know this only too well.

That is why it is important to save energy with the right cooling strategy in order to rather use that energy in training and competition. So that you - not only in Tokyo - reach your goals in a healthy and energetic way.

Hot in Tokyo

Trained to the point of peak performance for this top event and then failing due to the climatic conditions. This is a horror many  athletes might face. Without a perfect heat protection strategy, this could unfortunately become bitter reality in Tokyo. The extreme heat combined with high humidity strains on the body permanently. This leads to health problems, exhaustion and reduced performance for most people.

Studies have shown that even a loss of 1.5-2% of fluids results in a 4% loss of performance. The medium and long-term endurance is also impaired. Performance already decreases from the 2nd sprint onwards. Voluntary muscle contraction is lower at high temperatures and studies have shown that at 31°C a normal warm-up programme already led to 11% loss of performance. Why? At a body temperature of approx. 37°C (36.8°C) all processes in the body function optimally. To maintain this temperature, the body sweats in order to cool down through the evaporation of sweat on the skin. The body uses 80% of the energy for this thermoregulation. Energy that is no longer available for sporting performance.

In extreme cases, high energy consumption, high heart rate and dehydration can lead to states of exhaustion and, in an emergency, to heat cramps or heat collapse. This also endangers health. Pictures of marathon participants who stagger almost unconsciously to the finish line go around the world. This does not have to happen. More and more sports physicians and sports scientists are therefore advising active cooling.

The right heat coaching strategy for Tokyo

Cooling during sports improves body parameters, prevents heat stress and improves performance.

The results of international studies on cooling during sport are impressive. E.COOLINE itself has tested and verfied these results. The results were clear. Withe cooling, athletes achieved better lactate values, better body temperature and better VO2 max values. This means less energy consumption for the same performance. In one study this resulted in up to 10% more performance. In practice, this was up to two whole stadium rounds more in the same time. That's why professionals cool down on hot days. Not only during sports but also during the day. When it comes to competition, top athletes use any chance to cool down: shortly before competing (e.g. when warming up), after competing and in every break during the competition.

Beside these 4 strategies, it is of course important to spend the whole day at pleasant temperatures. The body is then spared from any temperature regulation and the associated loss of energy. On days with heat, stay in air-conditioned rooms (caution: not too cold because of the risk of getting sick) or especially outdoors with cool clothes. In addition, aplly the right drinking strategy (please do not drink too much - this can also have negative effects on the body) and use sun protection!

Precooling is all about saving energy to relieve the body from the effort of sweating - i.e. temperature management - even before exercise and especially when warming up.  As a result the body starts with a lower temperature and it takes long for the (energy consuming) sweating process to kick in.  Important: cool down at least 20 minutes before the start of the competition and definitely during the "warm-up"!  It is important to cool down with the right temperature.  Please do not use ice vests, because "a lot helps a lot" is not always the right thing according to studies. Too much causes the body to overreact and you achieve the opposite of what you wanted.

In case of precooling in a narrow stadium cabin, during "warming up" or in regions or days with high humidity, the products should then be precooled (COOL TO GO METHOD see below...) in order to have sufficient cooling capacity available.  This can be done hours in advance.

Normally it is sufficient to simply activate the E.COOLINE shirts, vests, cooling headgear and arm coolers, etc. with water and put them on for warm-up. Ideally, use them as long as possible directly before the sporting activity.
